The OB unit at Leamington District Memorial Hospital is exceeding all performance indicators according to a report from BORN Ontario issued Wednesday.
The Better Outcomes Registry and Network of Ontario tracks data for hospitals in the province. BORN Ontario shows Leamington's OB unit beat the performance target and provincial average in each of the six categories included in the report.
Maternal Newborn Director at the hospital Rebecca Ismail says the report is a great boost for Leamington's program after the OB unit was set to close for the end of March.
"It shows the public that we do provide very good care here and we have the mechanisms in place to support that," says Ismail. "That we're doing the right thing that we need to be doing for our patients."
Push back from the grassroots "Save OB" group helped to force authorities to consider the closure decision carefully. In May, the Erie-St. Clair LHIN adopted the recommendation from an expert panel to move forward with a new model of obstetrics care in Leamington and authorities are currently working on an implementation plan.
