Update: Herb Gray Parkway Opens Soon

After five years of dust, dirt and noise, not to mention detours and traffic delays, a large section of the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Pkwy. is set to late Sunday evening.

Director of the Windsor Border Initiative Implementation Group Garfield Dales says a stretch from Hwy. 401 to the E.C. Row will open. "There's still landscaping going on throughout the corridor," he says. "One of the pedestrian bridges is being placed, so there's still that work is to be finalized and there's work on Hwy.3 that's remaining also."

The remaining stretch to Brighton Beach and eventually the new Gordie Howe International Bridge to the U.S. is expected to open by the end of the year. Officials on both sides of the border hope to open the new bridge in 2020.

When it opens, Dales says the new parkway will handle up to 30,000 vehicles per day, up to 10,000 of those vehicles will be trucks.

"We appreciate the patience that the community, the drivers have displayed over the last five years of construction," says Dales. "This is certainly a major milestone for us, but there's still work to be done, and we're going to continue to work hard towards finishing the project."
