After six months of tweaking, Chatham-Kent has finally approved a bylaw to keep unwanted donation bins off private property.
Placing a bin without permission will result in a $500 fine. Groups have been given until the end of 2015 to remove any non-compliant bins.
Councillor Mike Bondy says for the majority of legitimate charities, this timeline won't be a problem. "Most of them don't have a lot of these bins, they'll be easier to take care of. They may have to make a few adjustments, maybe a few location changes, but really that's plenty of time."
After this year, the grace period for bin owners will be shortened to 90 days. It's the private property owners responsibility to remove the bins past that time frame.
