VIA Rail Property Becomes Dumping Ground

Residents in the Lakeshore area are concerned debris near VIA Rail tracks is devaluing their properties.

Over time, officials say people have used the area beside the tracks in places like Belle River and Deerbrook to store large-scale junk.

Mayor Tom Bain says the debris has simply piled up over time.

"People there began by storing their boats and junk vehicles. It has eventually led to the building of actual sheds and other buildings over there," he says.

The mayor adds the debris shows up sporadically and there will be stretches of 1 km to 2 km where the junk has been cleaned up. Bain says they're working with VIA Rail to get permission to enter the property to clean the area up.
