Kent Bridge To Receive New Watermain

In an effort to expand greenhouse operation, a new water main is being installed along Kent Bridge Rd.

The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission approved a tender on Thursday that will see the 300 mm water main put in this fall. The water main will extend around 10 km from Base Line Rd. to River Line.

East Kent Councillor David VanDamme says it's nice to see the project finally come to fruition.

"The underlying theme in this is that it's really going to help support the greenhouse development," he says.

The estimated cost for the project is $2,035,515, of which $946,650 will be payed by Greenhill Produce Ltd., which is a greenhouse located at 23282 Kent Bridge Rd.

"Agriculture is big business here in Chatham-Kent, so the fact that we can accommodate that for the greenhouse is a good thing," says VanDamme.

Around $136,004 will be paid by the 11 residential properties that signed up for water service so far. A total of 43 occupied residential properties exist within the area of the water main.

VanDamme says the water main is expected to be completed quickly, with work being done by boring under the road, with minimal road work required.

According to a report from the PUC, the project is expected to be completed by December 1.
