Water Festival Cancelled

Due to ongoing labour action from public elementary teachers, the Chatham-Kent and Lambton Children's Water Festival has been cancelled.

As of Friday, only 110 children were signed up for the festival at C.M. Wilson Conservation Area. Organizers normally plan for 1,800 students over the three day event.

Co-ordinator Don Hector says the future was always uncertain, with teachers currently not taking part in field trips.

"We were hoping in the second week that something would come through, but it wasn't to be. In fairness to volunteers, suppliers and contracts we hire out, we had to say it wasn't going to be a go," he says.

Hector adds they have no plans to run the festival later in the school year, even if an agreement is reached. The festival was originally slated for September 29 to October 1.
