It was 40 years ago today that the Franco-Ontarian flag was flown for the first time in the province.
Jessica Sylvestre, cultural coordinator at Ecole Secondaire Pain Court, Ssays the flag was created by students at Laurentian University who grew up going to french schools and wanted a way to celebrate their language.
"This is really a day where all across Ontario you're going to see kids dressed in white and green pretty much everywhere, in all the major cities there are celebrations in town hall and convention centres," says Sylvestre. "And it's really a way for us to show that even though Ontario is predominantly english, we do have a huge french presence here and we're very proud of it."
This year also marks 400 years of francophones in Ontario.
Hundreds of students gathered at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham for a flag raising while a similar ceremony was held at City Hall Square in Windsor.
