Vandals Threaten Ambulance Safety

Navigation lights at the heli-pad at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance were smashed by vandals on the weekend leaving staff to scramble and get them fixed before an air ambulance was needed.

The communications director at the hospital Zoja Holman says it is fortunate there were no calls that required and air ambulance.

"It is not under our authority or jurisdiction to determine whether an alternate landing location could be established," she says. "What we would be doing is working with the authorities including Transport Canada, EMS and Ornge to best support patient transportation and care."

She says land ambulance is possible in instances where an air ambulance is unavailable but air transport is optimal when minutes count.

There is a security camera at the site and officials and police are still investigating the incident.

Police are asking anyone with any information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
