A representative of the Kent Federation of Agriculture says some farmers continue to have concerns about the possibility of ATVs on country roads.
Louis Roesch says some of the concerns include worries that ATVs will contribute to pushing gravel off the road.
"We are not really against it, it's that the roads are not in a condition to handle these and the cost comes out of the tax base and right now we don't even have the proper dollar amount for putting gravel on our roads," he says.
Roesch says visibility might also be an issue especially when tractors towing several grain wagons need to make a right turn, and while he admits most ATV users are honest it may give thieves another way of getting around.
"It's something that we've not had to deal with in the past, the fact that they can be coming up through the back end of your farm now to get into your fuel tanks and tools and equipment," he says. "It's just not something we've been watching for."
Chatham-Kent Council recently agreed to have staff take another look at a possible bylaw and report back to council at a later date. Last month the proposed new bylaw failed by a vote of 9-9.
