Stolen Mother's Ashes Returned

A Sarnia woman says the return of the ashes of her mother, stolen in a break and enter last month, restores her faith in humanity.

Elvira Helferty issued a public plea through Sarnia police and BlackburnNews November 26.

The Helferty home along the Hwy. 402 corridor between Indian Rd. and Murphy Rd. was broken into the weekend of November 21 and 22.

A significant amount of jewelry was stolen but of most concern to Mrs. Helferty was that a box in a green velvet bag containing the ashes of her mother was also taken.

Helferty says early Sunday morning she found the velvet bag sitting on the rain barrel by the side of her house.

"I didn't know what to do. So I just grabbed the thing, went flying into the house. My husband was sitting at the table, and I just said 'oh my god, they brought her back!'," says Helferty.

"I was just beside myself. I couldn't believe it! I honestly did not think I was going to get her back."

Helferty says it's the best Christmas gift ever and she thanks the person or persons responsible for returning the stolen item.
