It is half-way through the period of increased RIDE programs heading up to Christmas and police services across the region are reminding people of the dangers of drinking and driving.
Provincial Constable Janine Belanger says the checks will continue past New Years Day.
"The RIDE checks are in full force right now, we are conducting RIDE Checks to ensure motorists are safe on the road and not drinking and driving or impaired by drugs," she says. "We encourage people to either plan for a taxi ride, use a service such as Home James, stay overnight or take public transit."
In Chatham-Kent the OPP marked the date by putting a smashed car in front of the detachment building.
Belanger says impaired driving results in the largest number of criminally caused deaths in the country.
