A local cyclist is setting his sights on the Olympics in 2020.
16-year-old Nick Wammes of Bothwell first became interested in sprint cycling while watching the 2012 Olympics on TV.
"I saw the team pursuit event when the Canadian women won bronze and I got interested. Found out there's a velodrome in London, Ontario and went to try it out, " says Wammes. "I went from being able to just do five laps on that track to be able to do 10 km scratch races, and 80 km races on the road."
Wammes, who has only been cycling for three years, is currently ranked 3rd in U17, but will be moving up to U19 age division.
Back in October he won a gold and two bronze at Nationals. Wammes trains in London at the Velodrome twice a week and goes to Milton once a week for additional training.
Wammes says he's focused on winning at the Canadian Junior Championships in April, and qualifying for Worlds.
