The Lakeshore Horse Raceway Association is holding a fundraiser today to help fellow horse trainers affected by a deadly barn fire near Guelph that saw 43 horses killed.
Tom Bain with the Lakeshore group calls the fire a tragedy that's hit close to home for everyone in the horse racing community.
"What a terrible, tragic event to happen and certainly members down here have said 'Wow, if that had happened down here I'm sure they'd be here supporting us,'" says Bain.
The fire at Classy Lane Stables Training Centre in Puslinch happened on January 4. Bain feels it's important to help those affected to get back on their feet in a difficult industry.
"The industry is one that's fighting now really to not only stay alive, but to try to grow," says Bain. "To have something this tragic happen sets us back a step or two."
The Lakeshore Horse Raceway Association has already donated $500 towards the cause.
The pasta dinner fundraiser at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 on Howard Ave. in Windsor just south of Hwy. 3 is set for 4pm to 7pm. Tickets are $20 at the door.
