If past events are any indication, tonight's Republican Presidential Candidates Debate in downtown Detroit could be a political ring match.
The debate featuring Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, John Kasich and of course front-runner Donald Trump will start at 9pm Thursday night at Fox Theatre.
Trump has garnered a lot of attention for a call to close the border to Muslims, and build a wall along the southern U.S. border with Mexico to keep illegal migrants out, but University of Windsor political scientist Lydia Miljan says it's doubtful he can follow through on those promises.
"It's not like the Canadian system where the prime minister controls the House and the Senate," says Miljan. "In the United States, they really do have a much more robust set of checks and balances."
Trump hasn't addressed how his administration would deal with Canada, but Miljan isn't surprised Canadians are interested.
"I don't think there's anybody who's not taking an interest in this. It's quite the spectacle. It really is reality TV for the masses," she says.
The debate comes ahead of Tuesday's Michigan primary for both the Republicans and the Democrats.
On Monday night, Democratic hopefuls Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders debate in Flint, where residents are still dealing with lead contamination in the city's drinking water supply.
