The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has formally committed itself to helping make having a healthy environment a human right.
They've agreed to be part of the David Suzuki-led Blue Dot movement, which is working to include a healthy environment in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Local Blue Dot Leader Maureen Geddes says there are 110 countries that currently have environmental protections in their highest levels of government.
"It'll make a big change when we negotiate global treaties for example. When we have the protection of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms for the environment, it will give us the structure we need to give the environment the attention it deserves," says Geddes.
Chatham-Kent staff will be reporting back to council its current efforts and future planned actions for conserving the environment at a later date.
