Health Alliance Cost Cutting Likely

The deficit at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance could double in the coming year and it is looking at some service changes to save money.

Chief Operating Officer Sarah Padfield says it is too early to talk about specific job losses but the alliance has to try and cut the deficit somehow.

"It's too yearly to say of anything specific we have absolutely no numbers on that but we are projecting a deficit next year and we have to try and find a way to recover that," she says. "Emergency services is one area that we are looking at because we have a fairly substantial deficit in that program given the way it is funded."

Padfield says there are no plans to close the emergency department at the Sydenham Campus in Wallaceburg but emergency services overall at both locations will be reviewed.

Padfield says it is more that the alliance is looking at the model that is used to provide emergency services rather than explore potential cuts.
