Fire Official Says Use 'Common Sense'

With the risk of a brush fire considered extreme in parts of Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent, a fire official in Windsor has some advice to prevent a fire in this dry weather.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has issued an extreme risk warning for the region after two months of below average rainfall. Environment Canada says Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent only had 37.6mm of rain last month. The normal amount is 86mm.

Fire Prevention Officer with Windsor Fire and Rescue Services, John Lee reminds the public open burning is banned in the City of Windsor, and if you're barbequing with charcoal, he says to keep a source of water nearby, whether it's the hose or a bucket.

"Make sure you're careful extinguishing your ashes and the remainder of your charcoal so that nothing is hot or warm when it's disposed of and can catch on fire."

If you're camping, it's smart to have water nearby to put out cooking fires, and if you're a smoker don't toss your cigarette butts out of the window of your vehicle.

Lee says there has been an uptick in the number of grass fires over the past two months.
