Counterfeit Currency At The Tilbury OnRoute

Chatham-Kent OPP are warning local residents to be on the lookout for fake banknotes.

Officers are issuing that caution after they were called to the Eastbound Tilbury OnRoute Service Centre on Tuesday and found two fake American $20 bills.

The local OPP detachment has a number of tips for cashiers who may come across counterfeit bank notes:

- Be especially careful during busy periods because this is when counterfeit notes are more likely to be passed across the counter

- Pay particular attention to customers who pay with banknotes that are much higher than what is needed

- If possible, keep the suspicious banknote and record its denomination and serial number

- Contact your local police force

- Record details about the person who gave the suspicious note and details of the transaction (e.g. time, context, licence plate and vehicle if possible)

- Remember that the person who is passing the counterfeit banknote may not be aware that it is a fake -- they could be an innocent victim
