Cyclists Implore Motorists To Drive Safely

Area cyclists seem to see varying levels of compliance when it comes to motorists passing them on area roads.

Drivers are required to pass cyclists, not only when the way is safe, but also leave at least a metre of space between their vehicle and the bicycle.

Chatham-Kent long-distance cyclist Paul Gardiner says he's been keeping track of who follows the rules the last couple weeks.

"Of the 141 people that have passed me, everyone observes the second rule, the distance," says Gardiner.

But he adds there have been a couple close calls.

"There were two instances where, we're still here, but we were cut off a bit because the person was passing when there was oncoming traffic," says Gardiner.

He says cycling can also be more challenging when moving from rural roads to more urban centres.
