AMO Brings New Eyes To New Jail

The AMO conference being held in Windsor-Essex is getting the South West Detention Centre a little more attention.

The Ontario NDP's corrections critic Jennifer French paid a visit to the new facility on Monday because she was attending the conference.

French wouldn't call it the best jail in the province, but liked what she saw.

"I was positively impressed. When you're talking about jails it's hard to say it's a nice one or not a nice one, but in terms of the facility itself I was impressed," says French.

While the MPP was impressed with the facility, she stopped short of calling it a model that should be replicated elsewhere in Ontario.

"If that's something to go towards, I really hope the government does the work and ensures that it is," says French. "The appropriate staffing levels, that's something that's a challenge her."

The new jail opened in 2014.
