A group of Lakeshore residents wants the town to purchase the Lighthouse Cove dock from the federal government.
The dock is currently on a list of properties the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is trying to divest.
Mayor Tom Bain says council will consider the purchase after seeing a petition from concerned citizens.
"We've asked administration to begin talks with the federal government with the idea in mind of is it possible to purchase it," says Bain.
A spokesperson from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Mark Sandeman says the property was offered to the town in the summer of 2014 but council indicated they were not interested in the facility.
Bain says the biggest concern is the amount of repairs needed on the dock to bring it up to an acceptable standard.
"It's not being maintained to the level where it should be and unfortunately if it continues like that, and that's the main concern, that it may become unsafe," says Bain.
Sandeman says if and when the town approaches them they would be open to negotiations. He says similar properties have been sold to public entities at a nominal cost with all necessary repairs done before the sale was finalized.
"As part of that discussion a lot of the conversation focused around is there safety-related repair work required, is funding required to bring the facility up to an acceptable state that the municipality would be willing to assume ownership," says Sandeman.
Sandeman says they have not actively tried to divest the property and there are currently no other interested parties.
