Leaf and Yard Depot officials say it feels like the leaves have fallen all at once in Chatham-Kent, but recent renovations should help them handle the intake.
Chatham's depot was closed on Monday, and should reopen Tuesday afternoon, as crews lay asphalt millings to extend the site.
"We have an opportunity to expand the site," says Waste and Recycling Manager Rick Kucera. "That expansion will mean essentially 35% more capacity."
The project was originally slated to take place six weeks ago, but Kucera says the work aligns with other road projects, and when crews were available. He adds the Creek Rd. site can normally take care of the amount of waste that comes in throughout the year, but it's the peak of autumn where they need the extra space.
"We've been able to handle it, but there's a week or two when we can't keep up, and we pretty much fill up before we grind in December," says Kucera.
Until the Chatham site is reopened, residents are asked to take their yard waste to the Harwich station.
