Officers Attacked With Bleach After Fire Call

A 54-year-old Chatham man has been charged after he allegedly poured bleach on police officers.

Emergency crews responded to a fire at an apartment complex on Friday around 2:30am, on Timmins Cres. in Chatham, but the homeowner prevented them from entering.

Chatham-Kent police say the jaws of life were used to pry open the door and when officers entered, the man allegedly poured bleach on them. The suspect also allegedly slapped an officer in the face and grabbed another officer in the groin area.

He was pepper-sprayed and arrested so emergency crews could extinguish the fire on the stove.

The man has been charged with mischief endangering life and two counts of assaulting a peace officer.

He was transported to the hospital for a medical assessment.

Chatham-Kent police say the officers weren't injured.
