Horwath Meets With CK Residents

Nipissing Game Farm owners Scot and Cheryl Ryckman are having their hydro concerns addressed by the Ontario New Democrats.

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath made a visit to the the quail farm in Muirkirk (near Highgate) Wednesday morning.

Like many Ontarians, Scot and Cheryl Ryckman have been facing high hydro costs.

Cheryl claims the costs of their hydro bills has seen a drastic increase from $19,507 in 2013 to $77,671 in 2016.

After hearing from the Ryckman's, Horwath spoke with Blackburn News on the NDP's plans to continue visiting Ontarians and share their plan on reducing hydro rates by 30%.

"What we're doing is we're bringing those stories and those realities into the legislature," she says. "I really feel that [Premier] Kathleen Wynn and the Liberals have been very out of touch."

Cheryl says they own the only quail farm, producing quail meat in the country -- something that has become very popular.

She adds they have been approached with the idea of moving their business to the United States, but it's not something they want to do because they've made a home for their family in Chatham-Kent.

"It shouldn't be that families are finding it hard to make ends meet, to pay the bills, and to build a good life for themselves and their families, " says Horwath. "There's a real worry that this is not only a problem now but that the next generation is going to have an even harder time."

After meeting with Horwath, Scot says the cost of hydro is why so many have lost trust in politics, however, there's an opportunity for the government to regain that trust.

"Once we see the savings, then that's when the trust will be there," says Scot.
