Bringing More Gardens To Chatham

For those who don't have access to raised beds for gardening, the Chatham Central Neighbourhood Assocation (CCNA) is helping eliminate that problem with a community garden.

The CCNA is installing eight raised garden beds at the Francis Moore Park in Chatham.

Vice Chair Bill McQuire says those chosen for the garden plots will get a chance to plant flowers and vegetables.

"Each garden will be assigned to one or two individuals," he says. "[Names] are drawn and then they can facilitate their own planting, growing and harvesting of their vegetables for themselves or whoever."

McQuire says space is limited, but there's a reason why they're only installing eight garden beds.

"We just want to start off smaller to ensure that the usage and the demand is there," he says.

If there's a high demand to garden in the area, McQuire says more beds might be added next year.

Those looking to use the Urban Garden or willing to volunteer to install the garden beds can email chathamcna@gmail.com or call 519-351-1228 ext. 2185.

Work at the garden will start on April 22, from 9:30am-1:30pm.
