You could soon end up paying a fine if you own an unlicensed dog in Chatham-Kent.
Manager of Licensing Services Nancy Havens says dog owners who don’t renew their dog licenses could pay a fine of up to $240.
Havens says commissionaires, who are contracted bylaw enforcement officers, will be going door to door in May and June to check for expired licenses or no licenses.
She says the commissionaires wear uniforms, always carry a badge to identify themselves, and drive a marked commissionaire’s vehicle.
Delinquent dog owners will receive a yellow non-compliance notice indicating immediate compliance is required and failure to comply will likely result in a fine.
Havens says s dog license costs $38 a year and $10 less if your dog is spayed or neutered.
She says all dogs 4 months of age or older must be licensed.
“Not only is it the law, it’s also the quickest and safest way to reunite a pet with its owner,” Havens says.
