Chatham-Kent council has approved a motion to explore more cost-effective infrastructure solutions with a potential new committee.
Councillor Leon Leclair's motion to look into forming a committee that will discuss infrastructure budgeting options was approved 16-2 at council Monday night.
Leclair feels it's important for the municipality to start looking closer at these costs.
"I personally feel that when something is done by a consultant they're not 100% looking out for the best interest of the community. Everything is about money... but I'm a business man too. Sometimes hard decisions have to be done. This is going to be uncomfortable, we're going to be stepping on toes," says Leclair.
Council approved recommendations to form the committee with four council members, three members from the agricultural sector, three members with infrastructural expertise, and other levels of municipal staff.
"Will we find a lot? I don't know yet. As a councilor here I've approved over half-a-million dollars worth of projects and we've never ever asked the hard questions I don't think," says Leclair.
He says he's already received mentions of interest to be apart of the committee from councillors Derek Robertson, Carmen McGregor and Jeff Wesley.
Leclair says the committee probably won't start working until October because the details still need to be ironed out. Though, he wants to start planning immediately.
