Masse Concludes World FINA Odyssey

Windsor-Essex swimmer Kylie Masse hoped to add to her medal total to close out the FINA World Swimming Championships.

She came up just short on the final day of competition Sunday, as her team effort in the 4X100 women's medley relay did not result in a medal. Team Canada, which also consisted of Kierra Smith, Penny Oleksiak and Chantal vanLandeghem, put in a finals time of 3:54.86, just .57 of a second behind the bronze-medal winning Australian team.

The United States won the gold in the event with a time of 3:51.55, and Russia took second place.

During the semifinals portion of the event, however, the team consisted of Masse, Smith, Rebecca Smith and Sandrine Mainville, qualifying third overall in the semis with a time 3:57.17. Masse says she enjoyed the different chemistry with her teammates.

“It was super fun. It’s the first time the four of us swam together. We really just tried to get pumped up this morning and swim as fast as we could,” says Masse in a statement.

Masse leaves the worlds with a record-breaking gold medal performance in the 100m women's backstroke, and a team bronze medal in the 4X100m mixed medley.

Masse, who is from LaSalle, won a bronze medal in the women's 100m backstroke at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
