The deal was reportedly completed just minutes ahead of the 11:59pm ET waiver trade deadline.
The Astros already have the best record in the American League.
Verlander had 28 starts this season and is 10-8 with a 3.82 ERA. He's also recorded 118 strikeouts in 111 innings since May 30.
In return, the Tigers will get three prospects -- Franklin Perez, Daz Cameron, and Jake Rogers.
Earlier in the day, the Tigers traded outfielder Justin Upton to the Los Angeles Angels for a pitching prospect and future considerations.
