The Chatham Maroons pulled one over the first-place team Sunday night.
The Maroons are trying to overcome a rocky start to the season by putting up two more points against the GOJHL Western Conference leading Leamington Flyers, beating them at Memorial Arena 5-3. It's the first loss of the season for the Flyers, who are comfortably in first with ten points.
Bryce Yetman scored at seven minutes into the first period on the power play for the Maroons. Josh Pope-Ferguson returned the favour later in the period on the extra-man to tie the game at 1-1 after one frame.
Both teams traded goals in the second period as well. Jake O'Donnell scored to put Chatham in the lead, though Blake Bain scored for Leamington a minute and 40 seconds later. The score after two period stood at two each.
The Flyers took the lead in the third period at 13:05 on a goal from Zach Guilbeault, but the Maroons put three straight goals on the scoresheet to regain the lead and stay ahead for goal. Dane Johnstone, Jordan Frasca and O'Donnell were the goal scorers.
Ryan Wagner knocked aside 31 out of 34 Leamington shots to take the win in goal for Chatham. Connor Meyerink faced 34 shots for the Flyers and stopped 30 of them.
The Maroons travel to London Wednesday night to take on the Nationals. Puck drop is at 7:30pm and all the action can be heard on CFCO Country 92.9/AM 630.
The Flyers host the Komoka Kings Thursday night.
