The Lambton Kent District School Board is investigating allegations that students are using board provided computers and tablets to access inappropriate content.
Director Jim Costello says the board does its best to provide safe internet access.
"We spent a lot of money on a firewall system and we still have students who try to step around that firewall and sometimes access inappropriate sites," says Costello.
He says they also use a state-of-the-art internet filtering system, which filters sites by category and pornography is one of the categories that's blocked.
"We ask our teachers to be very vigilant and try and position the students in a way that we can all see what screens they're on, but no firewall is 100% foolproof," says Costello.
Costello says there has to be some ownership for behaviour and decisions that are made.
"Just like a student who makes any decision to misbehave or skip school, the student has to be held accountable and parents have to have conversations with their children about the decisions they make," he says.
Costello says if an inappropriate site has been accessed, their first course of action is to investigate why the automated blocking didn't capture it.
Additionally, he says students and staff are reminded when they log on of the importance of utilizing technology in a legal, efficient, relevant and morally responsible manner.
