Travel will be a little easier for cross-border commuters this Christmas week.
The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel has suspended its major ceiling reconstruction project for the winter holidays, meaning that those heading to the States for work or a holiday getaway will be able to do so with less of a headache.
The tunnel will be open 24 hours a day until Tuesday, January 2, when it will resume its nightly weekday closures at 8pm.
The suspension of the construction project will make things easier for those who work in the States, as well as those on holiday break to go for shopping and relaxation. It will also help ease traffic flow for sporting events taking place in Detroit during Christmas week, including Tuesday's Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field.
A $17 million project is completely replacing the ceiling in the portion of the tunnel that runs under the Detroit River.
Periodic weeknight tunnel closures are expected to continue from the first week of January to summer 2018.
