Use Of Force Incidents Up For Chatham-Kent Police

Incidents requiring use of force by Chatham-Kent police went up slightly last year.

Police say there were 75 reports in 2017 compared to 60 the previous year.

A report shows firearms were drawn 44 times during an arrest last year compared to 27 times the year before. No gun was discharged in 2017 but an officer fired a gun in 2016 to protect against a dog.

Tasers were used 11 times in 2017 compared to six uses in 2016.

Bear spray was used less last year than two years ago. Bear spray was pulled out five times in 2017 compared to seven in 2016.

Officers also drew their guns less last year to destroy animals. They killed ten animals in 2017 compared to 14 the previous year. Eight deer, a fox and a mule were put down last year.
