Wind, Waves Could Cause Flooding Along Lake Erie

Localized flooding along Lake Erie this week could lead to some construction delays on Erieau Dr.

The road is scheduled to be shut down between Erie Shore Dr. and Internal Line from May 1 to May 16, but that will only be the case if Erie Shore Dr. isn't flooded. That could be the case this week as the wind picks up out of the southwest.

Environment Canada's Marine Forecast has issued a strong wind warning for Lake Erie with sustained wind speeds out of the southwest expected to hold steady near 30km/h Tuesday before picking up to 40 km/h Wednesday. At this point, those wind speeds are expected to increase even more to 50 km/h on Friday.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) says those strong winds could lead to some flooding along the lake's shore with waves expected to reach 1.5 m in height Wednesday morning and possibly higher later in the week.

The LTVCA says right now, the worst day for flooding is expected to be Friday, adding that the "prolonged wave action over this period could also lead to shoreline erosion and damage to shoreline protection works in vulnerable areas."

Residents who live along Lake Erie are being urged to pay close attention to the changing conditions and to prepare their properties accordingly.
