Municipality Confirms Uber Won't Be Coming To CK

A municipal official has confirmed that Uber won't be coming to Chatham-Kent anytime soon.

"The municipality has the same information as what the public now knows that Uber has indicated that they will not be providing service to Chatham-Kent at this time," says Christine Jackson, manager of provincial offences court and member of the municipality's taxi committee.

Jackson says the message was relayed to the municipality by a representative of Uber on Friday.

She says the municipality prepared the Vehicle for Hire Bylaw, which was approved in June, in a way that is conducive to the type of model that ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft require. However, there was never confirmation that the companies were coming.

"We never had a commitment or had any indication that Uber or Lyft would be servicing, we just positioned it so that it was available to them," says Jackson.

A local advocate who was pushing to bring Uber to the municipality expressed his disappointment with the company's decision earlier this week.
