Road Hockey Tournament To Remember Ronny

More than two dozen teams will be playing road hockey in Ridgetown this weekend in honour of a local boy who died of cancer earlier this year.

Ronny Betterly passed away in January at the young age of seven after battling a rare form of brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). His cousin, Mike Boersma organized the tournament because hockey was something Ronny was very passionate about.

Boersma says he's expecting about 33 teams and more than 170 players to come out for the "Tuukka Cup" at the Ridgetown arena Saturday and Sunday.

"Assuming this year goes well, I'm hoping to make it an annual event," says Boersma. "It's a lot more players than I was expecting to sign up... hopefully we can do a lot of good work for charity."

In addition to the road hockey tournament, there will be several other outdoor games for prizes at the arena.

The activities are set to start at 8:30am on both Saturday, August 25 and Sunday August 26 and will continue into the evening hours.

All of the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to charities that are supported by the Betterley family, including Childcan, Ronald McDonald House, and Children's Wish Foundation.
