Diocese plans to respond to sexual abuse

The Roman Catholic Diocese of London will soon respond to the sexual abuse of children by priests.

A release from the diocese said a "Letter to the Faithful" from Bishop Ron Fabbro will be released Sunday, September 16.

It will be read at every Mass in the diocese and will be available to parishioners in hard copy at every church.

The Diocese does have a Safe Environment Policy which is available on its website.

A letter from Fabbro on the website read, "It has been my goal to protect people against sexual abuse, to provide a way for dealing with allegations of abuse quickly and effectively, and to prevent it from happening again... I pledged to do my utmost to end the scourge of clergy sexual abuse in our diocese."

Fabbro made a formal apology to survivors of abuse at St. Ursula's Church in Chatham in 2006.

The Safe Environment Policy outlines procedures for the reporting sexual abuse, including the legal obligation to report it when it involves a minor under the age of 16 to the Children's Aid Society. It also speaks to prevention, the screening of clergy, and a code of conduct.
