Man charged after allegedly throwing hatchet at woman

An argument escalated quickly and resulted in a woman being hit in the head with a hatchet.

Police responded to a disturbance at a residence in Chatham Wednesday night where an argument between a man and woman turned physical when the male allegedly threw a hatchet at her. Officers said the handle struck the woman in the head.

Police said a 57-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with being in possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault with a weapon. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Pair caught with drugs and a weapon in a stolen van

A traffic stop for unauthorized plates resulted in auto theft, drugs, and weapons charges.

Police said at roughly 4 a.m. Thursday, an officer saw a van driving on Sandys Street in Chatham with plates not authorized for the vehicle. The release added the officer initiated a traffic stop and found out the vehicle was allegedly stolen. Police searched the vehicle and said they found methamphetamine, a digital scale and can of working bear spray.

Police said a 33-year-old Chatham man has been charged with four driving offenses, possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon in a motor vehicle, two counts of failing to comply, five counts of failing to comply and possession for the purposes of trafficking.

Officers added the 24-year-old Chatham woman was charged with possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon in a motor vehicle and possession for the purposes of trafficking.

The release said the stolen vehicle has been returned to the registered owner and both have been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
