Empty gas tank scammers target Wheatley resident

Chatham-Kent police are giving local residents a heads-up about a scam that aims to take advantage of Good Samaritans.

Police said earlier this week, they got a call from a Wheatley resident who reported that he had been approached by two suspicious men driving a white older model Ford Escape.

The two men reportedly claimed they had run out of gas and tried to sell the Wheatley man some jewelry for cash or the use of his credit card. By the time officers arrived at the scene, the suspects and the vehicle were both gone.

Officers are reminding local citizens not to fall for a similar trap in the future and to provide police with as many details as you can of the suspect(s) if you see something suspicious. That includes a description of the vehicle and the license plate, if possible.

Police say as a general rule, "if a stranger approaches you, trust your instincts as they are usually right."
