A petition to install a crosswalk in front of Tilbury District High School will go to council Monday night, however, the matter might not be resolved until the new year.
Councillor Mark Authier will present a motion at Monday night's council meeting, regarding a crosswalk at Jeffrey Street and Helen Street -- across Queen Street. The motion is in collaboration with a petition, which was started by a local woman. Martina Roach claims that drivers speed past the school zone, which is "an accident waiting to happen".
Authier said concerns regarding the area are not new but always seem to get pushed to "the back-burner".
Chatham-Kent council is still under a lame duck position until the new council gets sworn in, which means the budgetary decision is limited.
"With this last meeting still being a lame duck, we're not able to actually make it because [municipal staff] figure it'll be over the $50,000 mark," said Authier. "It will probably just go to the budget in January or February."
The main reason for installing a crosswalk has to do with safety concerns.
"Most high school students [know] how to cross a road but you could miss a car out of the corner of your eye and you never know what could happen," he said. "Then with the young kids that play soccer... some of them are extremely young so I'd rather it was safer for everyone."
In the meantime, Authier said he has been in contact with municipal staff ahead of Monday's meeting so that a traffic study could be done.
