Chatham-Kent OPP are still investigating a crash on Highway 401, which involved three transport trucks.
The collision happened Tuesday around 7:15 a.m. OPP had previously said that an eastbound transport truck drove through the highway’s cable barrier and crashed into two westbound transport trucks near the Merlin Road overpass. All three truck drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The westbound lanes of the highway between Chatham and Tilbury were closed for several hours.
OPP said a vehicle was reportedly broken down in the eastbound lane before the initial crash happened. Investigators would like to speak with the driver of that vehicle. Police are asking those with information to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
The call for concrete median barriers has been a long-standing issue for several residents in the area. Local advocate Alysson Storey said the crash that happened Tuesday morning could have easily been fatal.
