Natural gas rates increase in the new year

It may cost you a bit more to heat your home for the next couple of months.

Union Gas is increasing its rates for residential and commercial customers across Ontario starting January 1, 2019.

In the Southern Ontario region, the increase will average out to about $55 a year for residential customers for a total annual bill of about $762.  That is an increase of about $29 per year compared to the rate for the same region in January 2018.

Business customers in Southern Ontario can expect an increase of about $1,800 a year, working out to a $468 annual bill increase compared to one year ago.

Union Gas officials said the increase reflects changes in the market price of natural gas over the past two months, which has risen due to colder than normal weather across North America.

The rate increase follows four consecutive decreases in January, April, July, and October in 2018.

After the increase in January, the next rate adjustment is set to take place on April 1, 2019.
