Driver killed in Hwy. 401 crash identified

Provincial police have identified the man who died in one of three incidents reported on Highway 401 on Monday.

The OPP said the driver who was pronounced dead at the scene was 49-year-old Gurinderpal Matharoo from Stoney Creek. Matharoo was one of the truck drivers involved in a three-vehicle collision around 2:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

Police said Matharoo was behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer which struck the rear of another tractor trailer. No other injuries from that collision were reported.

The eastbound lanes of the highway between Kent Bridge Road and Orford Road were closed for several hours while police investigated that crash, as well as another which also happened in the eastbound lanes shortly after.

The fatal collision -- as well as a second collision and a vehicle fire -- are part of ongoing investigations.
