Chatham teens accused of setting fires in dumpster, Tim Hortons bathrooms

Two teen boys from Chatham are finding out the hard way that if you play with fire, you're going to get burned.

Chatham-Kent police said they arrested two 13-year-old boys and charged them each with three counts of arson after investigating three separate suspicious fires in Chatham Saturday.

Officers said the first fire was in a garbage inside the washroom at Tim Hortons on Third Street. It was extinguished by staff at the restaurant.

The second fire call connected to the investigation took place at around 9:40 p.m. Saturday after a dumpster on Beatty Street caught fire. Crews were able to quickly extinguish that blaze with no damage reported to any buildings in the area.

Police said seven minutes after that call, emergency crews responded to a third fire inside of a washroom at the Tim Hortons on Park Avenue East. In that case, the restaurant had to be evacuated and the damages were estimated at $10,000.

No injuries were reported in connection with any of the incidents.

Officers were able to identify two boys as suspects in connection with the case and arrested them. They were charged with arson and then released to their parents pending a future court date.
