Heavy rainfall is in the forecast for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.
Thursday evening, the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued a safety bulletin for local ditches, creeks, and streams.
The LTVCA predicts between 25 and 45 millimetres of rainfall between Thursday evening and Saturday morning. An additional 10 to 20 mm rain is also expected from Saturday through Monday potentially causing runoff in low-lying and poorly draining areas.
Wind speeds are expected to pick up on Friday in the Essex Region. Winds will likely shift out of the north/northwest and increase in speed up to the 40 kilometres per hour range over Lake Erie. Pelee Island may have high water levels and wave action on the north and west shorelines.
There is also a possibility of flooding in the low lying areas next to the Thames River, from Delaware down to Chatham, including the sidewalk in downtown Chatham.
The high water levels together with increased wave activity raise the chance for nearshore erosion, breakwall damage, and high waves.
Officials say residents should pay close attention to weather conditions and avoid rivers, streams and shoreline areas.
Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update the statement accordingly.
