OPP say Hwy. 401 crash serves as reminder to slow down

Chatham-Kent OPP are using a recent crash to remind drivers to use extreme caution when approaching service vehicles parked at the side of the highway.

Provincial police said a "crash truck" safety vehicle that was stopped in an eastbound lane of the Highway 401 near Merlin at around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon was hit by a vehicle that was trying to pass by.

Officers said the safety vehicle was providing protection for trucks that were painting lines at the time of the collision.

Investigators said the driver of the vehicle that allegedly caused the crash was approaching the safety vehicle from behind and ended up sideswiping it, causing significant damages to both vehicles. No injuries were reported by either driver, though.

As a result of the investigation, an 82-year-old London man has been charged with careless driving.

Officer are also taking the opportunity to remind drivers to slow down when approaching service vehicles that are carrying out repairs on the highways.
