Fire crews from Chatham and Wallaceburg responded to a working basement fire this morning at a residence on Elgin Street in Wallaceburg.
According to officials, the woman who was in the house at the time heard a pop sound before the smoke alarm went off. She then left the house and closed the door to the basement, which helped lessen the smoke damage to the rest of the house.
Fire crews were able to prevent the fire from damaging the living area of the home.
Most of the damage from the fire was contained to the basement area.
The damage is estimated at $30,000 and no injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
