More mosquitoes in Dresden are testing positive for West Nile virus.
The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit issued a media release Monday morning, stating that mosquitoes collected from a trap have tested positive for the virus, which comes roughly two weeks after mosquitos in other traps in Dresden tested positive as well.
Although the virus can be passed to people through an infected mosquito bite, most people don't show symptoms. However, those who do show symptoms may experience flu-like aches, vomiting, or in severe cases, a lack of coordination or paralysis. Health officials advise that people who experience symptoms associated with West Nile seek medical attention.
Residents are encouraged to take preventative measures, which includes wearing light-coloured clothes, using bug spray with DEET, and staying indoors from dusk to dawn. Health officials also recommend that homeowners remove any standing water from their property to get rid of potential mosquito breeding sites.
