Royal Canadian Legion Week kicks off on Sunday and is being celebrated locally with two flags being flown.
On Friday, a flag-raising ceremony was held at the municipal service centres in Wallaceburg and Chatham.
Municipal officials attended the events and praised the legions for being an important part of the community. This included Mayor Darrin Canniff who pointed out that this father had been a legion branch president in the 1970s.
Also on hand was Zone A3 Commander Len Maynard, who invited members of the public to visit any of the 10 branches in the area during Legion Week.
"Although recognizing the sacrifice and contribution Canada’s military men and women have made to our freedom remains at the core of the Legion, membership is no longer restricted to veterans of Canada’s armed forces," the municipality said in a release.
There are more than 1,400 Legion branches across Canada with in excess of a quarter of a million members.
