Local public school students loving life and school

It seems students at the local public school board like their schools.
The results from the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) School Climate Survey showed the majority of students feel their school is welcoming and safe. The findings also showed 90 per cent of parents and guardians feel their child’s school is welcoming.

The survey was done in April of 2019 and gathered input from 8,356 students in Grades 4 to 12, 1,674 parents and guardians, and 693 staff to help with planning and decision-making to support safe and inclusive school environments.

The survey included several questions about eating and sleeping habits, mental health, well-being, and bullying.

Public school board officials said overall, most students report feeling happy with life, with more than 90 per cent of students indicating they have at least one close friend they can trust. The survey also showed that most students know how to report bullying and more than half of the students feel a sense of belonging at school.

LKDSB director John Howitt said the board is committed to raising the bar for its students.

“I am pleased with the participation of students, staff and parent/guardians, as this information provides valuable insight for planning and implementing programs to support student achievement and well-being,” said Howitt. "Staff will be taking a closer look at individual school results, particularly students’ sense of belonging."

Multi-Disciplinary Teams at the school board, which include principals, teachers and education workers, are developing plans to support students and promote positive school climates.

The individual school results will be made public on October 8.
